La Habra Heights, CA -
Residents in the Heights will want to steer
clear of Harbor Blvd to avoid a “traffic detail” or 'sting' conducted by
deputies of the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department this Wednesday
night, Jan. 19.
Little is known about the “traffic enforcement detail” other than it will
take place on Harbor Blvd. South of Pathfinder and North of Peppertree
between the hours of 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM.. Sheriff deputies will employ
the use of radar to catch speeders, with the command post located at an
adjacent church off Fullerton Road.
The targeted area, Harbor Blvd, runs through La Habra Heights. The 4 lane
road is heavily traveled as commuters seek to escape the gridlock and
congestion of the nearby 57 freeway. The road also runs through a
wildlife corridor which sees frequent crossings by deer, bobcats and
mountain lions. The portion within the City of La Habra Heights is also
almost completely void of street lighting. The combination of the two
coupled with excessive speed makes Harbor Blvd. extremely dangerous to
both novice and seasoned motorist. Coincidently, a three car collision
occurred at the intersection of Fullerton and Harbor while filing this
report.
Traffic stings are not new to the Heights. In 2010, along Hacienda Blvd.,
motorist were greeted with undercover deputies hiding in bushes and
unmarked vehicles waiting to ambush unsuspecting midmorning commuters.
The daytime sting was announced prior to the “traffic detail” at The La
Habra Heights City Council meeting by Los Angeles Sheriff Department
representative Lieutenant McBride. The Lieutenant explained the detail
was to catch cell phone users. While reporting on the sting, this
correspondent was caught in the sheriffs net for a broken windshield.
Unlike the 2010 traffic enforcement detail, neither Lieutenant McBride nor
the City Council warned residents of the upcoming sting despite the fact
that the date of the enforcement detail had already been set.
This latest traffic enforcement detail differs from a December 5th 2009
DUI enforcement program along Harbor Blvd, where the goal was to stop
traffic for the checkpoint. This time the reported goal of the string is
to catch drivers that exceed the posted 45-50 MPH speed limit.
